Nelson Montessori Preschool (partner school to Kauri Montessori and Stoke Montessori Preschool) is seeking a kaiako / co-director to join our team.

Our school is licensed for 50 children and operates between 8:30am – 3:30pm. This is a full-time position in our preschool classroom, offering approximately 36 hours per week (Monday–Friday).

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is currently training in Early Childhood Education or is a beginner registered or provisionally registered ECE teacher
  • Is Montessori trained, or has a strong interest in Montessori education and a commitment to undertaking Montessori training
  • Has knowledge of Te Whāriki
  • Values strong partnerships with families, colleagues, and the wider community
  • Is a life-long learner who enjoys ongoing professional growth

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

Teaching practice

  • Confidence in planning, implementing, and evaluating learning experiences
  • A strong understanding of Te Whāriki and effective assessment practices
  • Ability to document and reflect children’s learning through meaningful observations and learning records
  • A recognised ECE or Primary teaching qualification with current registration from the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand

Communication and relationships

  • Ability to form positive and respectful relationships with children, families, and colleagues
  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to contribute to a supportive team culture

Personal qualities

  • Genuine enthusiasm for early childhood education
  • A calm, caring, and respectful approach when working with children
  • Energy and initiative to create engaging learning experiences

Professional approach

  • Strong organisational and time-management skills
  • Reliability and commitment to professional standards
  • Willingness to participate in centre development and ongoing improvement
