About This Role

Job Title: Maths Teacher Trainee

Job Type: Full Time, Fixed Term (One Year)
Start Date: August 2026
Application Deadline: 8am 22nd May 2026

Job Overview:

We are looking for both career changers and recent graduates to train as mathematics teachers.

Habs Elstree is the lead school of the North London Hub of the National Maths & Physics SCITT, a school centred, subject specialised teacher training programme designed to help address the acute shortage of Maths and Physics teachers.

The SCITT approach is different to traditional teacher training in the following ways:

  • Trainees on the programme are in school from day one and at the end of the year are awarded both qualified teacher status (QTS) and a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE).
  • Trainees gain hands-on experience in the classroom through two contrasting school placements in our partner schools.
  • The course is taught by dedicated subject experts and involves training at university and at the SCITT’s Day School at Habs Elstree.
  • Successful applicants will receive a £29,000 tax free bursary for the training year. Trainees can take out a Student Loan if required to cover the tuition fee of £9,535.
  • For trainees who left education some time ago, there are subject knowledge enhancement courses of various lengths available, for which trainees receive an additional bursary for completing.

Entry requirements for candidates are UK settled status, plus a UK first- or second-class bachelor’s degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant subject, in addition to a love of their subject and a desire to work with young people.

Information about taster days at Habs Elstree (comprising lesson observations and an introduction to the course) and the application and selection process can be found by contacting Imogen Barrett Walsh ibarrettwalsh@habselstree.org.uk

Further information about NMAPS can be found here and general information about teacher training is available on the Get Into Teaching website

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive sufficient applications for the role. Therefore, if you are interested, please submit your application as early as possible.

Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful candidate will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced check. The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
