AP Physics Teacher

Job Description

MCQ is developing a Deeper Learning Program committed to authentic, project-based learning. We seek to support our students’ development in five core areas: effective communication, collaboration, problem-solving and critical thinking, self-directed learning, and global leadership. In addition, we offer several Advanced Placement courses to validate the academic standard of our program and build our students confidence in their abilities to complete college level coursework.

The AP Physics teacher will inspire and challenge students to understand and apply physics concepts through rigorous coursework aligned with the College Board’s AP Physics frameworks and with the practices outlined.  The teacher will design learning experiences that bridge high-school and college expectations by combining AP-level content mastery with authentic, project-based investigations and engineering design tasks.  Students should learn to explain physical principles, solve quantitative problems, analyzing data, and communicate scientific arguments. 

Your core teaching responsibilities would include

1.       Teach AP Physics 1, AP Physics C: Provide a sequence of lessons and laboratory experiences that prepare students for the AP exams while emphasizing conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills.

2.       Align with College Board standards: Design a yearly Scheme of Work that covers all AP Physics content areas (kinematics, dynamics, energy, momentum, rotation, electricity and magnetism, waves, thermodynamics and modern physics), integrates lab work and ensures students are prepared for the exam structure. The teacher should regularly review sample questions and scoring guidelines and provide practice tests.

3.       Authentic investigations and engineering design: Students are to conduct scientific investigations and engineering design projects, the teacher will guide students through laboratory experiments, long-term research projects and engineering challenges that require formulating questions, designing experiments, controlling variables, gathering and analyzing data and iterating on designs.  Incorporate outdoor or field-based activities for an immersive learning experience where students collect real data, connect physics concepts to their environment and appreciate the interdisciplinary nature oof science.

4.       Data analysis and argumentation: Ensure students have opportunities to collect, organize and analyze data using spreadsheets, graphs and statistical tools. Ensure students present results in well-formatted lab reports and learn to construct and critique scientific arguments based on evidence. Further students are supported in collaborative projects such as the AP Physics design challenge, independent research or cross-disciplinary investigations, embracing hands on inquiry-based learning. These experiences help students develop self-directed learning skills and provide a bridge to college-level research and laboratory work.

5.       Bridge to College: Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress. Provide timely feedback on lab reports, problem sets and projects; adjust instruction based on data. Integrate instruction on scientific writing, collaborative problem solving, peer review and presentation skills. Encourage students to connect physics concepts with mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Provide guidance on time management and student strategies typical of college physics courses.

6.       Curriculum development: Collaborate with colleagues to create and revise curricula and assessments. Work with teachers in mathematics, computer science, engineering, economics or humanities to design cross-curricular interdisciplinary projects.

7.       Serve as an advisor or mentor, participate in co-curricular activities (clubs, research groups) and take part in school events, meetings and duties.

A minimum of 2 years of AP teaching experience is essential. 

A firm understanding of the AP curriculum standards, exam structure, and College Board requirements to design a Scheme of Work (SOW) for the subject.

Strong curriculum development and instructional design skills. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to motivate students and help them achieve academic success. 

Strong preference will be given to teachers with additional experience designing and facilitating interdisciplinary, standards-aligned projects, and experience collaborating with other teachers to create interdisciplinary lessons.

Teachers Job Description

Responsible for teaching their subject to pupils aged 12 to 18.

Reporting to Head of Deeper Learning Program

Contributing to the development of the department’s curriculum and resources.

Setting and marking course materials in accordance with School and departmental policies.

Consistent and effective use of appropriate strategies for teaching and classroom management.

Support Deeper Learning related activities especially Project Exhibition preparation and support.

One evening on duty for study hall per week. 2hrs.

Six to Eight Weekend Day duties in a semester. 4hrs each.

Participation in extracurricular activities is essential

 

Personal Specification

Bachelor or above degree in relevant subject with teaching qualification.

Minimum of 2 years relevant teaching experience is essential.

Experience teaching second language speakers is an advantage.

Boarding school experience is also an advantage but not essential.

Opportunities to be part of the boarding staff and middle management posts as the school develops.

Willingness to become a Head or Deputy head of a Boarding House is an advantage.

There will be opportunities to join the pastoral team and become a middle manager.
