About This Role

MLD Teacher – Autumn 2026 (Moderate Learning Difficulties)

Hurst Lodge School, is an independent special school, dedicated to supporting children aged 7–19 years who have a range of additional needs. We pride ourselves on our nurturing environment, creative curriculum, and highly collaborative approach - ensuring every pupil feels understood, valued, and empowered to reach their potential. We offer specialised educational pathways for students with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD). These students are typically taught core subjects by a dedicated Teacher who adapts lessons to their individual learning levels, often four or more years below their chronological age.

We are seeking to employ an experience and qualified Primary Teacher, ideally but not essentially, with experience supporting pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulties.

Key Responsibilities

Key Duties & Responsibilities

·         Promote positive student behaviour during lessons within your class and across the school. Ensure content and delivery of lessons are engaging

·         Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents/carers, educational psychologists, therapists who may be involved with students for whom you have a responsibility.

·         Work collaboratively with curriculum leaders to ensure students are engaged.

·         To effectively work alongside the department and curriculum leaders by seeking to continuously maximise the outcomes of students across the MLD Provision.

·         Work alongside MLD staff to monitor strengths and weaknesses across Mulberry class groups. Help to devise, train, and deliver training to improve planning, delivery, and outcomes of classes. Maintain regular contact with parents/carers to ensure positive interaction between school and home.

·         Evaluate schemes of work in accordance with school policy, ensuring a variety of learning opportunities for the development of key skills. Encourage the use of a variety of teaching strategies, which involve planned formative assessment and active learning strategies across the faculty and beyond.

·         Ensure lessons across the department are effectively differentiated/scaffolded for the individual needs of students. Share effective strategies for individual students and groups both across the department and whole school. Work collaboratively with the SEN Department to ensure effective strategies are shared and implemented consistently.

·         Create and implement action plans to improve teaching practice and regularly provide positive examples of quality teaching resources/ delivery. Ensure all work is marked, monitored and returned within a reasonable and agreed time span providing constructive oral and or written feedback.

·         Work collaboratively with the MLD lead to prepare, implement, and monitor Individual Learning Plans for students in accordance with school policy.

·         Establish and secure good relationships with both staff and students that promote the achievement of learning, whilst maintaining a purposeful and positive atmosphere in the classroom

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training: GCSE level 4 or above in Maths & English and Qualified Teacher Status

Experience: Previous experience working with students with SEN is desirable

Skills and Knowledge: Good organisational skills with the ability to build effective working relationships. Subject and curriculum knowledge relevant to the role. Excellent communication skills. The ability to remain calm. Good ICT skills

Personal Qualities: Passionate in the practise of teaching and learning in a SEND environment. An enthusiastic, team player, willing to go above and beyond. Be engaged in our school ethos. Resilient, positive and forward thinking. Have the capacity to inspire, motivate and challenge our students.

Other Responsibilities

Safety & Wellbeing / Safeguarding:  Promote the safety and wellbeing of students, and help to safeguard students’ wellbeing by following the requirements of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and our school’s child protection policy

Professional Development: Help keep own knowledge and understanding relevant and up to date by reflecting on their own practice, liaising with school leaders, and identifying relevant professional development to improve personal effectiveness. Take opportunities to build the appropriate skills, qualifications, and/or experience needed for the role, with support from the school

Competitive salary, dependent on experience and qualifications. £36-45k (actual salary)

Hours: Monday, Wednesdays and Thursdays 8.15am – 4.30pm, Tuesday 8.15am to 5.30pm (includes 1 hour CPD at the end of the day) Fridays 8.15am– 1.30pm (32 weeks plus inset days)   Location: Yateley, Hampshire
