About This Role

Terrington Hall School are seeking a fixed term Grad Students for 1st September 2026 to 7th July 2027. Grad Students play an important role in the development and well-being of our pupils and in the smooth running of the school. With responsibilities spanning the boarding house, performing arts, classrooms, sports, enrichment activities and beyond.

This is a full time, term time only (please note that the School week runs from Monday morning to Saturday 12.20 pm.) You will receive an individual timetable for classroom assistance, Performing Arts support, office support and break duties. In addition to this you will have a Grad student rota for morning/ evening/ weekend duties and your time off.

Weekend boarding duties will be expected as required (usually once per half term). Other occasional weekend work may be required such as Drama festivals/ Sports Day/Open Days. There may also be the opportunity to attend overnight residentials.

Report to the Head of Boarding and Director of Performing Arts.

Boarding Responsibilities:

  • Assist House parents with the operation and running of the boarding house.
  • Help the children to get ready for the school day ahead and ‘wind down’ after a busy day at school.
  • Support the boarders with their bedtime routine.
  • Ensure pupils are behaving appropriately following the school’s behavior policy.
  • Assist with boarding activities and off-site trips.
  • To ensure that you are familiar with the Boarding Handbook, the school's policies and procedures for safeguarding, countering bullying, health and safety, and are aware of the appropriate responses required in these areas.
  • To perform any other tasks that the Headmaster or House Parents may reasonably request.

Performing Arts Support:

  • Assist Director of Performing Arts and co-teach some curriculum lessons.
  • Set up and support music ensembles (e.g. orchestra).
  • Assist with productions and concerts (termly).
  • To accompany choirs, small groups and individuals for rehearsals and pupils for practice sessions, internal and public performances, and examinations.
  • If the candidate is an organist, playing the organ at some services in Church as directed by the Director of Performing Arts.
  • To teach aural for practical exams and music theory up to a minimum of Grade V.

Classroom Support:

  • Assist classroom teachers as directed.
  • Check ‘Teams’ daily to ensure you are aware of where you are needed that day, every day is different.
  • Supervise pupils during break times, sign out and playground activities.
  • Help children with their Prep (homework) both in school and at boarding.
  • Attend INSET days and staff training.

Other:

  • Attend and support school trips and residential trips.
  • Assist with school functions such as parents' evenings, sports days and speech days, which may be evenings and weekends.
  • Support with general office duties including administrative tasks, photocopying, laminating etc.
  • Support with the School’s marketing and social media.
  • Support with the School’s PE and Sports where possible.

Ensuring that all actions are discharged within the regulatory and legislative requirements to which the school is subject.

Child Protection and Safeguarding

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play. To fulfil this responsibility effectively, all practitioners should make sure their approach is child related. This means that they should consider, always, what is in the best interests of the child.

You must comply with Terrington Hall School’s Protection and Safeguarding Policy and Procedures and the requirement to report any concerns relating to the safety or welfare of children. A safeguarding induction and ongoing safeguarding training is provided.

Qualifications/experience

  • Relevant Performing Arts degree
  • Music/ drama qualifications and performance experience
  • Work experience in a school setting or with children is desirable but not a necessity

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to take on new challenges.
  • The ability to play the piano/organ or a string instrument would be advantageous; but we could consider applications from instrumentalists.
  • A musician with good sight-reading skills and experience of accompanying and/or choral singing, ensemble playing, conducting.

  • Maintain high professional standards of attendance, punctuality, appearance and conduct.
  • Establish and maintain courteous working relationships with professional colleagues, pupils, and parents, and set a good example through presentation and personal and professional conduct.

Training

  • To undertake such training and professional development as relevant to the post.
  • To attend staff meetings, briefings and INSET days.

Safeguarding and welfare of children

The job holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact with, will be to adhere to and always ensure compliance with the Schools’ Child Protection Policy Statement. If while carrying out the duties of the post the role holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school, they must report any concerns to the School’s DSL or the Headteacher.
