About This Role
Role Overview
The Science Technician provides a comprehensive technical support service across all aspects of the science curriculum for pupils aged 11β16. Working under the direction of the Head of Science and teaching staff, the post holder plays a vital role in supporting high-quality teaching and learning, particularly in the delivery of practical science.
This is a varied and hands-on role within a collaborative department where practical experimentation is central to the student experience. The successful candidate will be approachable, organised, and a clear thinker, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
The role also offers opportunities to contribute to wider STEM activities, including enrichment programmes, events, and educational trips.
Key Responsibilities
Lesson Support
Prepare and provide materials and equipment to support lesson delivery, particularly for practical investigations.
Prepare stock solutions and other scientific resources as required.
Set up and assist with practical demonstrations when requested.
Collect, clean, and safely store equipment after lessons.
Laboratory & Resource Management
Maintain a clean, tidy, and well-organised preparation room.
Undertake routine checking, cleaning, and basic maintenance of equipment (e.g. microscopes; training provided where necessary).
Monitor stock levels and order supplies as required.
Liaise with suppliers to source appropriate resources.
Support the upkeep and presentation of teaching laboratories, including displays.
Contribute to effective departmental resource management and budget awareness.
Health & Safety
Ensure a safe and compliant working environment for staff and students.
Follow guidance from CLEAPSS and other relevant advisory bodies.
Ensure safe storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials.
Keep up to date with health and safety procedures and attend relevant training.
Maintain and contribute to risk assessments and practical activity guidance documentation.
Wider Contribution
Support practical demonstrations, STEM events, assemblies, and celebration days.
Assist with STEM enrichment activities, including CREST awards (or be willing to develop in this area).
Accompany and support off-site STEM trips where required.
Person Specification
Skills & Experience
Experience working in a science-based environment (desirable).
A good level of manual dexterity and strong organisational skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with staff and students.
Flexible, proactive, and able to manage changing priorities.
Competent in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
Knowledge & Qualifications
Science A-levels, a science degree, or equivalent (desirable).
Knowledge of working safely with chemicals and laboratory equipment.
Understanding of hazards associated with biological materials and sharps.
