About This Role

ROLE SUMMARY:

 

Reddam House Berkshire is seeking an experienced and committed Head of Boarding (Residential) to lead pastoral care and residential operations during the Summer Camp programme running from 12 July to 8 August 2026, with training and preparation days prior to camp and a final wash-up day at the end of the programme.

 

The successful candidate will be residential on site and responsible for the welfare, safeguarding and daily boarding routines of both day and boarding students. Reporting to the Director of Camps, the Head of Boarding will oversee residential mentors and boarding staff, manage health and safety procedures, liaise with parents, and act as a senior decision-maker in operational and emergency situations.

 

This is a senior leadership role within the Summer Camp, requiring strong judgement, calm decision-making, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of care, discipline and student wellbeing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Lead pastoral care for all day and boarding students, ensuring safeguarding, discipline, health and safety are maintained at all times.

  • Oversee boarding procedures, including sign-in/out, mealtimes, pocket money, bedtime routines, medication and night duties.

  • Supervise residential mentors and duty staff, ensuring continuity of care across staff rotas and days off.

  • Act as overnight point of contact in the absence of the Director and respond to emergencies including fire, intruder or medical incidents.

  • Hold responsibility for first aid and health issues alongside the Director, Nurse and Residential Mentors.

  • Liaise with parents and manage communication related to student welfare.

  • Manage room allocations, valuables, passports and flight information for campers.

  • Support programme coordinators and camp staff to ensure smooth daily operations.

  • Provide training and guidance to staff before and during camp.

  • Support evening activities, house competitions and wider camp events within the boarding house.

  • Assist with health and safety risk assessments, fire and security procedures.

  • Be on a rota including evening, late and overnight duties as required.

  • Carry out additional duties as directed by the Director of Camps to support the successful delivery of the programme.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

 

  • Experience in the outdoor recreation and/or education sector.

  • Experience working in a boarding environment.

  • Experience managing and leading teams.

  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in the absence of the Director.

  • Ability to ensure students’ physical and emotional wellbeing.

  • Experience of curriculum-based teaching (desirable).

  • Experience coaching or teaching sports or extra-curricular activities (desirable).

  • Teaching, coaching or leadership qualifications (desirable).

  • First Aid qualification (desirable).

  • Boarding qualifications or relevant boarding experience (desirable).

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate and lead staff.

  • Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise effectively.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

  • Creative and proactive approach to problem solving.

  • Physically active and able to participate in outdoor and recreational activities.

  • Patient, dependable, enthusiastic and self-controlled approach to leadership.

Candidate Requirements

  • A recognized teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, QTS, or equivalent).
  • A minimum of 2 years verifiable post-qualification teaching experience.

  • A bachelor's degree directly related to your teaching specialization.
  • Clear criminal record check spanning the last 10 years of residency.
