About This Role

Are you a design technology enthusiast ready to inspire the next generation? Do you dream of a career where you can truly make a difference?

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and inspiring classroom practitioner with a real passion for design technology. We offer an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and motivated team, and you must possess the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of ‘students first’. Applications are invited from both newly qualified and experienced professionals with expertise in any of the resistant materials disciplines (product design, construction, and engineering).

The Design Technology Department

Our design technology department is a friendly, supportive and high-performing team of teachers. The department includes a combination of experienced and more recently qualified staff. The department is a great place to start your career as a teacher, as well as somewhere where more experienced staff can thrive.

The department is extremely well resourced with subject-specific equipment. There are two resistant materials classrooms and one food and catering classroom. Every classroom has a visualiser, and these are used extensively by the team in frequent and highly effective episodes of guided practice to develop strong procedural knowledge and confidence for independent and deliberate practice. There is a substantial departmental office, and the department is supported by two technicians (resistant materials and food).

The department is heavily invested in developing strong disciplinary knowledge at KS3 and KS4. We have multiple thriving design technology clubs that aim to foster a passion for design technology in the real world and equip students with the confidence and skills to be successful.

We have a strong whole-school literacy strategy that aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading and subject-specific tier 3 vocabulary. The department is passionate about students developing their subject disciplinary vocabulary and gives plentiful opportunities for them to do so. Furthermore, there is a comprehensive oracy strategy that is fully embedded within the department and across the academy. This is supporting writing confidence and competence, as well as arming students with exceptional speaking and listening skills.

The design and technology curriculum is built with the end in mind, and the KS3 curriculum prepares students for the KS4 qualifications of WJEC Hospitality and Catering (vocational) and WJEC Construction and the Built Environment (vocational). These programmes of study are fully resourced with high-quality materials.

About Us

Outwood Grange Academies Trust provides a high-quality learning and cultural environment that inspires and motivates children. Whether you are ambitious for progression or determined to be an outstanding classroom teacher, Outwood is the place for you. Leadership development, succession planning and capacity building are major priorities for the Trust, as this enables us to facilitate rapid progression for those who want to advance either in the classroom or at a leadership level.

Outwood Academy Carlton is an Ofsted Good-rated, 11–16 academy based in the friendly, attractive village of Carlton in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The Academy became part of the Outwood Family of Schools in 2016.

In October 2024, Ofsted noted that “students are taught to be ‘good human beings’ as part of the ethos at Outwood Academy Carlton” and that they “have a strong moral code and behave well in and outside of lessons”, including contributing to the wider community. Ofsted also noted that “leaders are determined that all students should succeed and be well prepared for life through a curriculum that develops their knowledge, skills and character”.  Furthermore, Ofsted acknowledges that students who regularly attend school make strong progress as a result of the school’s rapid improvement.

We believe that learning should be both enjoyable and enriching. We are innovators with a knowledge-rich curriculum, designed to personalise learning for every student, helping them to reach their potential. With a holistic view of education, we value vocational, practical, creative and academic excellence equally, creating an environment where every student can shine.

We have won numerous awards as a school, and we have been accredited with the prestigious IQM Award, in addition to being an IQM Centre of Excellence, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us. We are also delighted to have been awarded the United Against Bullying Bronze Award from the Anti-Bullying Alliance of the National Children’s Bureau, which demonstrates our commitment to stopping bullying and improving the wellbeing of our students. We are also very proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

Outwood Academy Carlton is situated in North East Barnsley and is easily accessible from South and West Yorkshire, with Wakefield, Sheffield, Doncaster, Huddersfield and Pontefract all within commuting distance. We are just 5 miles from the M1.
