Wairoa College is at a defining crossroads. Following a period of significant challenge—including statutory intervention to reset attendance and achievement—we are seeking a visionary Tumuaki/Principal ready to dismantle outdated systems and co-design a future-focused kura for our 350+ tauira.
The challenge and the vision
The essence of Wairoa is resilience. While recent monitoring (2024–2025) identified the need for strengthened attendance and moderation systems, it also spotlighted pockets of brilliance: a 150% increase in Māori STEM success via the Pūhoro programme. We need a leader who won't just "manage" the status quo but will radically improve internal systems and community trust.
What you will bring
We seek a transformational architect who can demonstrate a track record of "turning around" a challenging school. You will:
Overhaul systems: Embed robust NCEA moderation and data-driven attendance strategies to move the school from recovery to excellence.
Champion manaakitanga: Deeply connect with our 90% Māori student body and whānau, ensuring school culture reflects our identity.
Deliver success: Meet the high principal eligibility criteria by providing evidence of raising student achievement and improving community perceptions.
Remuneration and support
To attract a highly effective leader, this position includes the Principal Recruitment Allowance:
Allowance value: PRA is available for an eligible applicant,
Eligibility: The appointee must meet separate principal eligibility criteria, including evidence of successful performance reviews and the ability to build relational trust.
Support: The successful candidate will work with an independent adviser and receive targeted MoE leadership development.
